NOCD has created a virtual therapy program that delivers ERP through video teletherapy. The program aims to maximize therapeutic impact while minimizing the time required from therapists by eliminating travel time and allowing for more efficient, remote delivery sessions.

Furthermore, 50 minutes one-on-one teletherapy sessions were provided through a videoconferencing platform (Zoom) by licensed and vetted therapists who had an advanced degree in clinical psychology or a related field (eg, Ph D, Psy D, LCSW, LMFT, or LPC). Similar to telecoaching, therapists and participants were able to communicate through messaging in-app.

In this study, we examined teletherapy apps from the viewpoint of user reviews to understand how ethical principles were followed and incorporated.
The rapid proliferation of teletherapy apps has occurred in an environment in which development has outpaced the various regulatory and ethical considerations of this space.

One example is web-based group therapy sessions, also known as group teletherapy. Just like e-learning was found to be equally effective as in-person learning for pain education, group teletherapy was also found to be equally effective as in-person therapy for patients with OUD [19,20]. Likewise, medical students can continue to listen to the stories of patients with OUD through visiting group teletherapy sessions.

In contrast, digital teletherapy solutions can change the nature of the interaction by, for instance, augmenting the conversation with interactive materials and features or placing the meeting in a fictional virtual reality environment with avatars. Concerning evaluation, a pen-and-paper questionnaire can be digitized into a web questionnaire that calculates the results.

A particular aspect of telework that intersects with mental health is the provision of teletherapy. There is already evidence that internet and videoconferencing–based psychotherapy seems to be as effective as in-person therapy for a number of indications, such as anxiety and depression [21,22], although there remains a need for more rigorous research in this area, especially considering the reduced tendency to recruit patients who are more severely ill or suicidal in teletherapy studies [23].

Telemental health, referred to as teletherapy, has been used over the past 20 years [5] with demonstrated effectiveness [6,7]. Teletherapy refers to the use of electronically based communication such as videoconferencing, telephone calls, and mobile apps to provide access to mental health services, typically across distances [8]. Rapid legislative changes, training, and guidelines resulted in an exponential increase in teletherapy when compared to prepandemic levels [9,10].

To address the challenges of delivering ERP in terms of barriers to access and associated cost and time, NOCD has developed a digital behavioral health treatment program using video teletherapy. Remote ERP for OCD, delivered by video or telephone, has been demonstrated to significantly improve OCD symptoms [13]. Two head-to-head comparisons with in-person treatment in adults and adolescents show only small differences in outcome [14,15].
